Holiday Monte Cristo Sandwiches

The Monte Cristo is the kind of shape-shifting sandwich that we all need in the hazy, “is time even real?” week between Christmas and New Years.
When you’re not sure what day of the week it is or what time of day it is, make a Monte Cristo Sandwich.
It can be breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It can be fancy enough for brunch or easy enough for a lazy 8 PM (how is it 8 PM?) dinner.
I’ve long loved the savory sweet Monte Cristo, which is essentially a grilled cheese and ham sandwich that’s been French Toast-ified (how long will Wicked lingo be acceptable? I hope forever).
We serve it with powdered sugar and some kind of jammy preserve, which for some might feel like too much, but I assure you it is just right.
